Visit your dentist every 6 to 12 months for a routine check-up to help keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Regular visits allow potential problems to be identified and treated quickly and easily.

Examination

Your dentist will ensure you are comfortable before examining your teeth and gums.

You can discuss any concerns you may have. X-rays may be taken if closer investigation is needed.

Hygiene Advice

Your teeth may receive a brief clean during your visit.

After having a few consultations for Composite Bonding with the best cosmetic dentists I could find in and round Glasgow, I settled with Dr Ryan here at The Smile Rooms and I was the best decision I could have made. During my consultation I was made to feel at ease with the treatment fully explained along with what I wanted, and the results I wanted to see put at the forefront of the conversation. Dr Ryan took time to explain what could be done and made sure my expectations were managed and met. Iona was also great, going above and beyond explaining costing and pricing plans along with timeframes, coordinating my treatment and many questions answered! After my 2 weeks of whitening prior to the composite bonding, the day of the treatment came and it was carried out extremely efficiently and smoothly. I was totally comfortable during the whole procedure. After we were done and I seen my results I was totally over the moon. I am from the US and was on holiday in the UK when I started having a problem with one of my fillings. I called multiple dental practices in Glasgow to try to find someone who would take in a patient (who was obviously not already in their system) for an emergency appointment. 1Smile was extremely helpful and got me in for an appointment within a few hours of calling. Dr. Ryan Shum quickly found the source of my pain (a cracked filling and signs of decay), and advised a root canal treatment. Seeing as how I was only in Glasgow for another couple hours, he very graciously and clearly explained all of my options and helped me choose a route that would quickly solve the pain problem and get me through the rest of my holiday until I could return to the US. The treatment itself was great--Dr. Shum was sure to check in with me often during process to make sure I was doing okay. The treatment was also very successful (no more pain the rest of my trip!). Since my appointment, Dr. Shum and the office have been very good to communicate with as I have needed to get my x-rays and treatment summary letter sent to my new dentist in the US. The office called the following day just to check on how I was doing, and Dr. Shum has written to me personally to follow up and offered his assistance and advice even though I am back in the US now. I'm extremely grateful for the entire 1Smile Dental Clinic and Dr. Shum. Their professionalism, expertise, communication, and overall kindness is excellent. If I lived in Scotland, I would absolutely be returning to the clinic, and I highly recommend 1Smile to everyone else!

Have been with 1smile for over 10 years and find the staff are really helpful and professional. I've had various treatments done, including fillings & composite bonding and have found all work to be carried out to a high standard and good value for money. They offer dental plans that can allow you to have several hygiene appointments and regular check ups, in order to maintain your oral health. Reception staff are excellent and I've never had any issues trying to get an appointment - even been slotted in same-day for dental emergency. Would highly recommend 1smile. If you’re visiting us for a dental check-up, you will first be asked if you have any problems with your gums and teeth. We will then devise a treatment plan based on what you’ve told us – and we’ll ensure any future appointments perfectly complement your lifestyle and schedule.

Tooth decay treatment in Glasgow

What is tooth decay?

It is estimated that around 1 in 3 adults in the UK have tooth decay.

Tooth decay is when acids in your mouth dissolve the outer layers of your teeth.

The acids are formed by the bacteria in your mouth combining with small particles of food (particularly carbohydrates found in sugary food and drinks) and saliva to form a sticky film (plaque).

If the plaque is allowed to build up, the acid begins to break down the outer surface of the tooth.

Eventually this can enter and cause damage to the soft matter at the centre of the tooth.

What are the symptoms of tooth decay?

Tooth decay may not show any visible symptoms until it has reached an advanced stage. The symptoms of tooth decay include:

How is tooth decay treated?

FIRST STEP

In the early stages of tooth decay our dentist may apply a protective fluoride varnish to help stop further decay.

Second Step

For later stages of tooth decay, depending on how advanced the issue is you may require a filling.

If the decay has travelled into the soft matter of your tooth, you may need root canal treatment.

Last step

In severe cases where the tooth cannot be restored it may need to be removed.

What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment is used to treat infection at the centre of the tooth, treating this is also known as endodontics.

The aim of the treatment is to avoid extracting the tooth, and in most cases is successful in preventing this.

The infection in the tooth is caused by bacteria that live in the mouth and then enter the tooth.

The infection can be caused by damage to the tooth or trauma, such as after a fall or by advanced tooth decay.

What is the procedure for root canal treatment?

FIRST STEP

After numbing the area, the tooth needs to be cleaned by the endodontist and the infected soft tissue inside the tooth is gently removed.

Second Step

The tooth is then packed with a biocompatible material.

Last step

Following the root canal treatment, a filling or crown is placed on the tooth to restore the functionality and protect the tooth.

When is a tooth extracted?

A tooth extraction is a fairly common procedure in dentistry. A tooth may need to be extracted for a variety of reasons. The most common reasons are:

  • The tooth is unrestorable through tooth decay, trauma or periodontal disease.
  • Wisdom teeth may need extracting if they are impacted (stuck and unable to grow normally into the mouth) and therefore may cause recurrent infections in the mouth.
  • In orthodontics to help create space for the other teeth to be moved into straighter positions.

Tooth extractions can be done in a single appointment, with a follow up appointment for more complex cases. Our dentist will be able to advise you on the best options for your situation.

What is a dental filling?

A dental filling is used to restore a tooth damaged by decay to a more normal function and shape.

The process involves removing the decayed tooth material, cleaning the affected area and then filling out the cavity with a dental filling material such as porcelain or a tooth coloured resin (composite).

Amalgam (silver coloured) fillings can be offered; however, by nature they are visible and many people choose to replace these for a more natural looking filling.

The advantage of a dental filling is that it helps prevent further decay, and consequently more complex treatments.
